Basil Cavalieri & Joe Hunziker Names 2016 Recipients of the Victor John Feudale Award by Historical Society of SSF

The South San Francisco Historica l Society presents its 32nd Annual Historical Society Banquet on Friday, October 21st, 2016 starting at 6:00 PM at the Elks Lodge, 920 Stonegate Drive, South San Francisco. The Master of Ceremonies will be Former State Assemblyman Gene Mullin. This year ‘s honorees of the Victor John Feudale Award are Basil Cavalieri and Joe Hunziker who are being acknowledged for their outstanding contributions and dedication to the Historical Society and the community.

Basil Cavalieri, 83, is a long-time business owner, community volunteer and philanthropist. His company, South City Car Wash opened in 1958 and today is celebrat­ing its 58th year as a family­ run business. Basil has main­tained membership in the Chamber of Commerce for over 55 years and was hon­ored with a Lifetime Achievement in Business presented by Congresswoman Jackie Speier. Basil has been a member of the South City Lions Club for 45 years and served  as President in 1974 and 1979. He has been  a member of the Elks Lodge in SSF for 50 years. He was honored as “Person of the Year” by the City of South San Francisco in 1976 for his volunteer work coordinating our Bicentennial and in  1994 by the SSF Italian-American Citizens Club for dedication to com­munity service. For over 50 years Basil’s business donations have supported local police, fire, schools and youth sports in South City. His business continues to support our current and former men and women in uniform with free car washes, food and gifts on Veteran’s Day. Basil directed and sponsored the first St. Jude Childrens Hospital fundraiser for SSF in the mid 1970’s. Basil is celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary this year with his lovely wife, Barbara. Together they have two sons (both married) and 4 grandchildren and spend much of their summers enjoying retirement in Lake Tahoe.

Joe Hunziker was born in South Central  Minnesota, on November 17, 1958, the youngest of three children to German and Norwegian descendants. His father was a home improvement business owner, and his mother was a stay at home mom. In 1970 his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’ s disease at age 54, and that changed his life. Joe graduated from Minnesota State University-Mankato, in 1984, moved to San Francisco and began his first full time job for Saint Mary’s Hospital in their Adult Day Health program in Spring of 1985. That started his professional career of working with aging adults, memory loss individuals and their families.

Joe took the Adult Day Care Coordinator job with the City of South San Francisco in March of 1996, just prior to his only child, Anel ise being born. Joe has been employed by the City of South San  Francisco  for over 20 years. He became the Senior Services Supervisor and began his Jong stand ing com­mitment to the Historical Society. He had the pleasure of know­ing and working with Victor John Feudale, as well as being a neighbor of Phyllis. His interactions with Ray and Rose Bava continue to this day. He also worked closely with Eleonore Fourie and Elizabeth Ervin, while the Museum was housed at Magnolia. He is honored, humbled and grateful to be the recip­ient of the 2016 Victor John Feudale Award.
