South San Francisco, CA   January 31, 2017  Submitted by Sheri Boles, CPUC

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today submitted its annual report to the Governor and the Legislature that highlights major activities and key actions of the CPUC in 2016 in regulating the state’s energy, water, transportation, and communications industries.

In 2016 the CPUC continued to work on reform measures for more effective governance and accountability, and in strengthening the commitment to safety internally and in the state’s regulated utilities.

The CPUC adopted approximately 3,500 formal and informal decisions in 2016; held more than 250 days of Evidentiary Hearings; investigated and inspected more than 1,200 safety incidents; and completed more than 50 financial audits.

The CPUC continues its efforts to help the state meet the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and implementing Senate Bill 350 (De Leon, 2015). For the first time, the CPUC’s Annual Report contains information about greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from renewable, efficiency, and demand response programs.
