Did you know December is “Learn a Foreign Language Month?” Well, the Library can help you with that. Pronunciator is a fun and free way to learn any of 80 languages with self-directed lessons, live teachers, movies, music, and more. With a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet you can take lessons that include flashcards, pictures, maps and even 350 of streamable and downloadable audio lessons. You can also access a special platform just for kids. Use your library card to create an account and learn a language today!

 

Food for Fines

Do you have overdue fines or fees on your library account? You can clear them by bringing non-perishable food items to the library for donation to Second Harvest Food Bank! Any amount of food will clear your fines and fees from the following libraries: Burlingame, Daly City, Redwood City, San Mateo County Libraries, San Mateo, South San Francisco and College of San Mateo and Canada College. Please be sure to bring your donations to a service desk so we can make sure to credit your account. Charges for lost or damaged books cannot be cleared with a Food for Fines donation.

Creative Cafe-Coloring for Adults

Take a break from your everyday routine and join us in coloring at the library! Choosing different colors and patterns will help you de-stress from your daily lives while stimulating your creative brain. Color a page or two and enjoy some refreshments and conversation. Are you interested in learning to knit and crochet? Try your hand at these ever popular crafts! Experienced staff will be on hand to help you learn the basics. Supplies are limited so feel free to bring a skein of worsted weight yarn and size 8 knitting needles or size “J” crochet hook. For experienced knitters, bring a project and any questions you might have to this social knitting circle!

Volunteer Orientation

Are you interested in giving back to your community? Do you LOVE your library? Come to our Volunteer Recruitment and Orientation!

 

Staff will present information on such topics as:

* How to get started volunteering with the library

* Options for teens, adults and tweens

* Time commitments and requirements

* Service options and variety of volunteering positions available

Presentation will be followed by a Q & A session and the option to apply for volunteer service on the spot.  

 

Kaiser Knitting Group

Monday, December 4th and 18th  1:30-2:30 p.m.

Knit for a cause! The Kaiser Permanente Knitting Group meets twice a month at Kaiser Permanente Cancer Treatment Center and is open to all knitters. We chat, knit and have fun! Knitters are welcome to join in knitting hats, blankets, scarves and other warm things for donation to radiation and chemotherapy patients, but any project you wish to work on is great. Experienced knitters will be on hand to help with questions you might have. This offsite event is held at the Kaiser Permanente Cancer Treatment Center located at 220 Oyster Point Blvd., South San Francisco, CA 94080.

Textile Tuesday:  Winter Stocking or Gift Bag

 

Textile Tuesday is held twice a month.  At the first meeting we work on a specific project.  The next workshop is an open sewing lab where participants can finish up past Textile Tuesday projects or bring in their individual sewing projects.  Make new friends, learn some new shortcuts and tricks, or just share your knowledge and experience with the group!

Spruce up your interiors with festive wintertime décor! Easy to sew Winter Stocking or Bottle Gift Bag are perfect for spreading cheer. Make either or both!

Supply List (stocking):

  • 2 contrasting Fat Quarters for stocking
  • ½ yard lining fabric
  • 10” ribbon
  • Fusible web such as Heat ‘n’ Bond Lite (optional)
  • Applique material such as felt, 1 square (optional)

  • ¼ yard fabric or fat quarter

Sharpie Mugs

Make sure no one else uses your mug again! We’ll learn how to customize standard ceramic mugs with oil-based Sharpie pens, and discuss ways to protect your design from repeated washings, and you get to take home your mug creation at the end!

Managing Your Holiday Photos

It seems like great photos happen every few minutes during the holidays! Family in from out of town, festive decorations, the kids’ happy faces, before you know it your digital cameras, phones and computers are bursting with snapshots. Then, when you look for that one special picture it is impossible to find! There is help! Our staff can assist you with learning the best ways to catalog and store your photos to more easily access them later and to protect them for future generations.

Manicure Design Bar: 3D Printing

Sit and paint your nails while learning to use Tinkercad, Cura, and Ultimaker 2+ to design and print personalized nail attachments.   Followed by nailfie.  Capture your work with our ipads.   Beautiful nails are worth sharing.

Join two of our expert staff knitters and learn how to make a knitted braided ball!  Ever want to learn how to knit but was always intimidated by those long scarves and huge blankets?  Now’s your chance to learn two key knitting skills (knitting and purling), make something small and fairly easy, and have fun at the same time!  This is a several session program so please try to come to each session.  Each session will build on a previous skill learned and the participant will be able to make a completed ball by the end of the last session.  Previous knitting or crocheting experience is recommended but not required.  Recommended supplies is a size 9 or 13 knitting needles (especially if you want to take your project home and work on it at home!) and your choice of light yarn.  (Easier to learn how to knit with lightly colored yarn).

You can now check out an ABCmouse account using your library card to use at home with your child! Come to the library for a demonstration of ABCmouse – Take Learning Home with more than 8,500 activities that teach reading, math, science, health, social studies, art, and music. ABCmouse makes learning fun and exciting, and it teaches children through books, games, songs, puzzles, videos, and more! Recommended for or children 2 years and up.

Make and Take: Parol 2.0 (Star Lantern)

Come celebrate the Filipino Heritage with a parol workshop.  Parol is a star shaped lantern that is constructed with bamboos and decorated with tissue paper.  This year, lanterns will be decorated with other materials including craft sticks and Light Emitting Diodes.  We will demonstrate how to incorporate arduino uno for programmable illuminating lanterns.  Bring friends and family for an afternoon of making, sharing, and Filipino snacks.

Drawing Circle

Do you enjoy drawing? Or is making lines on paper terrifying, but you’d like a safe place to give it a try? Either way, you should make a line straight to the Drawing Circle, where we will provide blank paper, pencils of many colors, and fancy erasers. (There will be so many hoity-toity erasers, you’ll want to erase everything and begin each drawing all over again.)  You’re welcome to freehand it, and we’ll also bring out many of the library’s how-to-draw books for inspiration and guidance. Open to all ages and skill levels.

Dash & Dot

Come check out Dash and Dot! These are real programmable robots, charged and ready to play. They respond to voice, navigating objects, dancing, and even singing! We will use Wonder, Blockly, and other apps to create new behaviors for Dash. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

At Kids Coding, we program simple to complex computer games, create video animations, and other cool tech activities for digital littles. All skill levels are welcome!  For December, the winter freeze has made the race track slippery.  Learn to make a two-person racing game with Scratch.  We’ll cover, editing tools to create cool race cars, record race track sounds, and apply simple programming.

Lego Club: Sports Arena

Create your own sports arena! Make anything from a baseball stadium to a quidditch pitch. Everything built will be displayed in the children’s area until next Lego Club. Themes are suggestions. Free design is always encouraged. Duplo bricks provided for younger children. Through the use of basic structural techniques and highly creative engagement, Lego provides children with a chance to explore 3D creation.

Spanish Book Club: Bendiceme, ultima

La historia se basa en Nuevo Mejico en la Segunda Guerra Mundial donde un joven hombre y una anciana mujer de la medicina lo ayuda a luchar una batalla entre el bien y el man dentro del pueblo.  No se olvide de recojer su copia gratis en el mostrador.

 

This Month the Spanish Laguage Book club will read and disscuss “Bless Me, Ultima”, by Rudolfo Anaya. The story is based in Mexico during the Second World War II where an elderley medicine woman helps  a young man in his battle between good an evil.  Pick up your free copy of the book at the front desk, while supplies last.

Interested in virtual reality(VR)? See what all the buzz is about with a live demonstration of the Oculus Rift.
