Final HS Football Score 91-0; Bullying or Just Life?

South San Francisco, CA October 23, 2013football image

With the heated conversations across the country regarding the Texas High School Football game that ended with a 91-0 score and a father threatening lawsuit over bullying, we put the question to our South City folks.

Hey what do you think about the Texas High School Football game score of 91-0? Was that ‘bullying’ by the winners as one of the Dads is reported to say? Or has our society overly embraced the ‘Everyone is a winner’ attitude? Is there a balance?
How would you react if this happened at one of our local games?

Here are some responses from some of our neighbors. What do you think?

Carlos Gonzalez Dont like getting beat 91-0, stop them and it wouldnt have been so bad

Cyndi Reulein Medrano It’s a game

Kerry Sponseller Kids today are totally spoiled. They have learn that sometimes they may lose. This had nothing to do with ‘bullying’, they just had a very bad team and lost to one of the best teams in the state. Whatever happened to “you can’t win all of the time”.

Angelique Presidente As a parent I would be livid that the refs and opposing team would let that happen at a high school level game. As a coach I would be disappointed and offended at the opposing coaching staff, there are plenty of ways to balance out the game a bit more and preserve your team’s win, bullying is too far fetched, this is very sad!

Candice Lofton Sometimes you lose, badly. Prepare kids for life. You can’t stop life when it gets tough.

William Shon II There is no ‘mercy rule’ there. What should they do? Use the game as practice or insult them further by putting in cheer squad members or run around in circles wasting everyone’s time or take players out and play with fewer players? They can’t just stop playing.

Craig Morganti I wouldn’t call it anything close to bullying….but definitely embarrassing lack of sportsmanship

William Shon II I would sub out the best players and give the other guys the game and with the starters I’d try out new untested plays or anything other than run up the score, if that’s what they truly did.Sub out all the starters

Kerry Sponseller They did have second and third string players in the game early. It was one of the best teams in the state playing a team that entered the game 0-6 and was just that bad. I am tired of todays way of thinking “we are all winners”. Kids have to learn real life experiences early on otherwise that will be in for a rude awakening when they are adults.

William Shon II Well then that’s all they can do. That’s why I said what do they expect them to do? Running around aimlessly would be more insulting.

Scott Gordon Bullying? No. Lack of sportsmanship? Almost definitely. Even in the NFL it’s considered a huge breach of etiquette to pointlessly run up the score on an overmatched opponent.

Aaron Grgich Tell them this: “look guys, things could be worse. Hell Sandusky could be your coach and he’d be up all of your asses for playing like that”

Robert Landucci It’s Texas. They are football insane…

Oscar L Martin Put in the bench and pull your starters give the other team a chance

Xavier Haro Run the clock no stop time

Devin Keahi Coaches put in his third team and stopped returning kicks the other team just was that bad …the losing dad shud go cry somewhere else

Matt Stone If they was getting whooped that bad, the losing coach should’ve stopped the game and pulled his team out. Why should the winning team stop what they been practicing so hard for. There’s good teams and bad teams, that’s sports. Even in the NFL teams get beat 50-0..

Bonnie Tognetti That score was awful and the coaches should have played everyone but their starters. That said, the behavior of the winning team’s fans was deplorable. Here is a good story: When Terra Nova was a new high school they played South City. At the half the score was 21-0 in South City’s favor. Louis Bagnall was Principal then. He went to Ray DeJong, head varsity coach to tell him to stop scoring .Early in the third quarter the Warriors scored again. Bagnall told Coach DeJong he would turn out the lights on Clifford Field but the coach explained that he was playing the 3rd and 4th string–and no way was he going to try to shut them down as they played seldom if ever. In the 4th quarter the Warriors scored again. Final score 42-0. I think Coach DeJong made the right call. I know this because my boyfriend, now husband, Jerry, was captain of the South City team.

Brad Jones That everyone’s a winner shit needs to go that’s what’s wrong with all these little shits nowadays . But 91-0 that’s running up the score

Andrew Greenlee They pulled the starters after 21 plays. Played a running clock in the second half. There is only one insane dad that thinks this bullying.

You don’t tell 3rd stringers not to play hard. This might be their only chance to play. You don’t tell them to lay down. Side note; I was class of ’86. We beat terra nova by 60. When I talked to a terra nova player at the north/south all-star game, he said that game didn’t sting. They knew they were overmatched going in. I’ve never forgotten that.

Jose Escobar Or high school….50-0, 70-0, 90-0, 125-0, 150-0 OS unacceptable and as a coach, you have control, game was won….imagine an injury on the last score….lack of sportsmanship and common sense from the winning coach!

Manuel Vega Jr What r they supposed to do?? Be on defense for the rest of the game?? Make a mercy rule and stop complaining.. Dad who complained kid probly got hurt at the end of the shalacking

Rose Chang Chiu I didn’t read it, but it sounded like (from the commentary here) the winning coach was doing the best he can not to run up the score by taking out the starters. It’s one thing if he kept his starters, but the game stops when the clock runs out. You have to keep playing. I’m sure the kids are smart and know the possibility of it happening to them (you know where you stand against your opponents). These are high school athletes; they can be resilient if we let them.

Carlos Gonzalez They should have taken a knee every play until 4th & 20 and convert the 4th and repeat lol. This is pay to play or Ayso

Julie Mcgrayne Zanartu You win some, you lose some. Kids need to learn this!!

Yeyo Sanchez This generation of kids have got to understand that not everything in life is fair or equal. With that said.. if that team was a top flight school with nothing but division 1 players on the team so be it. Let them play to their potential. If they let up on the “not so great” school… all its going to do is pump false hopes into those kids who think they could hang with that other school. I say, remove the bubble wrap from these kids and let them enjoy a good ol ass whipping once in a while. Might actually open their eyes to the real world. #jusssayin

Carlos Gonzalez  to Yeyo Sanchez preach

Yeyo Sanchez Thanks homie… my book ” This Generation is F#cked ” will be in stores for the Holidays to  Carlos Gonzalez

Dan Anchick The winning team should have taken sleeping pills in the first quarter too I guess.

Shawn Hainley Whiney lil’ bitches

Dave Love I believe that if my team was winning I would continue to win until the contest was over. The other coach could have forfeited if he didn’t like it. Everyone is NOT A WINNER. Dammit do not change the rules to let lesser athletes feel special. Where do you people get this shit?

Joanne Evars quit whining just let kids play
