Public invited to meet Santa and help brighten young patients’ holidays

On Saturday, December 9th, at 10:30 a.m. the Golden Gate Harley Owners group and Santa will rumble through the streets of San Mateo to deliver thousands of gifts for children who receive care at San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC), the county’s public hospital, during the holidays. This year’s Holiday Toy Run marks the 28th anniversary of the event.

The public and media are invited to cheer on the riders, meet the Harley-riding Santa, and attend a free reception hosted by the medical center’s volunteers and staff.

“For 28 years, the roar of motorcycles and Santa riding up on a Harley have signaled the start of the holiday season at San Mateo Medical Center,” said Dr. Chester Kunnappilly, SMMC Chief Executive Officer. “We appreciate our dedicated volunteers who coordinate this event for us every year.”

At the reception, Harley riders and visitors will place gifts for kids under a holiday tree. The gifts will be delivered to thousands of children who are receiving care at San Mateo Medical Center’s hospital, dental and community clinics this holiday season.

“We’re so grateful for the continued generosity of the riders and public who donate their time and gifts to young patients who may not otherwise receive gifts during the holidays” said Glynis Carreira, Volunteer Coordinator.

More than 2,000 new, unwrapped toys for babies and kids through age 17 are needed. Donations can be made in advance by calling (650) 573-3731, or anyone can bring a new, unwrapped toy to place under the tree at the event.
