Background: Jerry Hill began the valentine crafts project with the South San Francisco seniors as an assemblymember in 2009, during his first term as a member of the California Legislature. The annual activity with the city of South San Francisco’s Senior Services program continued throughout Hill’s four-year tenure in the Assembly. This year will mark Hill’s fifth valentine crafts project with South City seniors and his first as a senator.

Each year, the seniors’ handmade valentines are sent to deployed locally based units or to veterans of locally based units. This year, the valentines will go to deployed California Air National Guardsmen of the 129th Rescue Wing. The prospect of sending the seniors’ valentines to National Guardsmen holds special meaning for Hill, who served in the California Army National Guard as a staff sergeant from 1966 to 1972 in the Headquarters Company of the 233rd Engineering Group, which was based in San Francisco.

“I look forward to joining the South City seniors in their valentine crafts project each year,” said Hill, D-San Mateo. “Their handcrafted cards with messages of pride, gratitude and encouragement will make this coming Valentine’s Day extra special for those deployed with the 129th Rescue Wing.”
