Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Cruises Through South City; Arrests Made

South San Francisco, CA September 25, 2013

Last Saturday night Everything South City received word from South City resident Lucinda Denning about police activity happening in real time. “Any Daly City peeps here. San Pedro down to El Camino South is blocked off.  Hella cops. I want to know what’s going on, anyone have information?” Denning wrote on our Facebook wall.  Within moments other locals chimed in:

Pamela Innis; Oh no….I live 2 streets away from there! I saw all those bikers earlier today….

Jose Chavez; They watched too much Sons of Anarchy maybe.

Ashley Hope; There was a shooting. It was on the news

On Wednesday September 25 the SSFPD have put out this media release: SSFPD 9.24.2013 outlaw motorcycle gang-page-001

Although the report police states names would not be released, reporter Joshua Melvin published this article on Monday identifying those arrested.  As of today, September 25th Melvin updated his report to identify the Hell’s Angels were involved in addition to the Vagas gang. We have shared Melvin’s update below.

Two wounded, five arrested after outlaw biker party on Peninsula

BROADMOOR — Two men were wounded near an outlaw motorcycle club party at a Mexican restaurant Saturday — one critically — and five bikers were arrested after officers discovered they were carrying weapons, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted around 7:50 p.m. on the 7400 block of El Camino Real, but police didn’t immediately find any victims because both men went to San Francisco General Hospital on their own. Police haven’t announced any arrests in connection with the shooting, nor did they say what sparked the violence.

However, South San Francisco police say about an hour after the shooting they arrested five Sacramento-area men tied to or members of the Vagos Motorcycle Club on gun possession charges. At the time of the shooting, the Vagos had been at a party at Estrada’s Mexican Restaurant in Broadmoor, which is on the same block where the two men were apparently wounded, police said.

Neither South San Francisco nor Broadmoor police would say if the men arrested were believed to be responsible for the gunfire. Three of the five bikers were out of jail on $100,000 bail by Monday morning, authorities said.

The California Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have branded the Vagos a criminal gang involved in drugs, guns and extortion.

San Mateo County authorities first got word of the shooting victims around 8:30 p.m. when San Francisco police told Broadmoor officers two wounded men, 37 and 41 years old, turned up at San Francisco General Hospital. One was shot in the arm, while the other was in critical condition due to a gunshot wound to his abdomen, Broadmoor police Cmdr. Ed Nakiso said.

After people reported hearing gunfire near Estrada’s on Saturday night, police from Colma, Daly City and Broadmoor investigated, but found only empty bullet shells and no wounded people.

Then an hour later South San Francisco police pulled over a truck and car that were trailing behind at least 30 Vagos riders around 9 p.m. near Highway 101 and the city’s downtown. Police seized five handguns and a shotgun that were found in the two cars, South San Francisco police Sgt. Bruce McPhillips said.

He added that the bikers had left the party at Estrada’s when South San Francisco police pulled them over for alleged vehicle code violations. The five men were booked into San Mateo County jail on an assortment of gun possession, gang and drug charges. Prosecutors haven’t filed any charges.

Arrested were: Steven Solis, 48, of North Highlands; Stanley Cutright, 57, of Sacramento; Mario Hernandez, 41, of Citrus Heights; Jonathon Kleiman, 33, of Orangevale; Daniel Lynch, 56, of Rancho Cordova. All but Cutwright and Lynch were free on $100,000 bail, authorities said.

Two Hells Angels bikers wounded in Peninsula clash

BROADMOOR — Two Hells Angels were shot and wounded — one critically — during an apparent clash Saturday with a rival motorcycle gang at a Mexican restaurant, authorities said Tuesday.

The gunfire came as members of the Vagos and Wanted motorcycle clubs, at least 40 bikers total, were meeting at Estrada’s Mexican Restaurant on Mission Street. But because the victims, men who are 37 and 41 years old, got themselves to San Francisco General Hospital and have been uncooperative, the full details of what happened remained obscured, Broadmoor police Chief Dave Parenti said.

The Vagos and Hells Angels, which federal and state authorities have labeled criminal gangs involved in guns, drugs and prostitution, have violently clashed in recent years. One high profile incident at a Sparks, Nev., casino in Sept. 2011 ended with the president of the San Jose Hells Angels chapter, Jeffrey “Jethro” Pettigrew, shot to death. A Vagos leader has been charged with the killing.

Police believe local Hells Angels learned of the gathering at Estrada’s and during a subsequent confrontation at least five shots were fired around 7:50 p.m. Investigators are seeking to gather surveillance footage from nearby businesses because witnesses have been unwilling to talk.

Authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting, which left one man wounded in the arm and the other shot in the stomach. They also have not identified any suspects. Police took one biker into custody near the restaurant Saturday on a warrant that was unrelated to the shooting.

In the wake of the shooting, police from several police departments rushed to the 7400 block of El Camino Real, but found only empty bullet casing. The victims weren’t discovered until they turned up at the hospital and staff alerted San Francisco police, who then notified Broadmoor officers.

However, South San Francisco officers arrested five associates or members of the Vagos as a group of about 30 of the club’s riders and two other vehicles rolled through the city Saturday night. Police said they found five handguns and a shotgun in the two vehicles.

It doesn’t appear those men could have pulled the trigger in Broadmoor because police pulled them over about 20 minutes before the shooting, Parenti said. Police initially said the Vagos riders were stopped after the gunfire.

The five Sacramento-area men arrested on gun and gang charges have since been bailed out or released from San Mateo County jail, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Prosecutors will not file charges now, but the investigation into the guns was continuing, Wagstaffe said.

As for whether Saturday’s shooting would prompt retaliation from the Hells Angels, Parenti said it was likely.

“These people are going to take it upon themselves to handle it,” he added.

They were in front and one of two trucks that were with them, was behind me on Mission St and then Mission Road, they continued down Mission and I turned to go to Trader Joe’s. They were driving nicely, i wouldn’t have known that there had been trouble.
