SSF Hosts Marrow Donor Registry Drive Tues Nov 21st Noon-4pm at the MSB

South San Francisco, CA   November 16, 2017 Submitted by Sheri Boles, City of South San Francisco

Did you know that every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer? For thousands of critically ill blood cancer patients, there is a cure. And, it could be you.

The City of South San Francisco, South San Francisco Police Department, and Be the Match are hosting an inaugural Marrow Donor Registry Drive! It will be Tuesday, November 21, 2017, from Noon to 4 p.m., at the Municipal Services Building (MSB), Betty Weber Room, 33 Arroyo Drive.

What is a Marrow Donor Registry Drive?
Unlike a blood drive, a bone marrow drive is a onetime event. You will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire, then painlessly get your mouth swabbed. That’s it! Your profile will be stored in a secured database and checked to see if your marrow matches anyone in need. An appointment is not necessary, as this process is relatively short. If you want to make an appointment, please visit: https://join.bethematch.org/SSF. If you cannot make it on Nov. 21, no worries! You can register online and receive a cheek swab kit by mail.

Do I Qualify to be a Bone Marrow Donor?
Individuals between the ages of 18-44 years old are asked to please register as a donor. Why? According to statistics, people between this age range are selected as a donor by a physician more than 95% of the time. And, if you match a patient in need, 80% of donations are now done through apheresis. Yes, no surgery required!

Want to Volunteer?
Volunteers are needed to help with our first-ever marrow donor registry drive! Student volunteers (minimum grade is high school) are welcome! If you are interested in volunteering as greeters and/or assisting with registration, please contact Sergeant Dave Kennan, Neighborhood Response Team, at dave.kennan@ssf.net<mailto:dave.kennan@ssf.net> / 650.877.8900 or Sheri Boles, Community Programs Manager, at sheri.boles@ssf.net<mailto:dave.kennan@ssf.net> / 650.829.6680.

Make today the day you register to save someone’s life.

Thanks, and we hope to see you on Tuesday, November 21st!
