Kitchen Yoga

Author Talk – Kitchen Yoga: Simple Home Practices to Transform Mind, Body, and Life by Melanie Salvatore-August

Join the South San Francisco Public Library for an afternoon yoga talk with author Melanie Salvatore-August. Melanie’s new book, Kitchen Yoga, offers an inspiring twist on integrating yoga and life: she cooks up poses and practices to do wherever you are. From a modified Downward Dog while waiting for your morning coffee, to Locust Pose in the living room, and many more. Finish your day with relaxation exercises in bed and slip into a calm, peaceful sleep. Salvatore-August couples recipes with helpful illustrations and nourishing affirmations which will transform your simmering stress-filled life into feast for the mind and body.

Melanie Salvatore-August is a speaker, author, YogaWorks trainer, teacher/mentor, birthing coach, and CTA yoga-based life coach.  Her book, Kitchen Yoga; Simple Home Practices to Transform Mind, Body and Life, was released in April 2015 by Yellow Pear Press. She is the creator of the nonprofit FK (FierceKindness.org), a movement of compassion and non-violence.  She is an ambassador for lululemon and lives happily with her husband and three little boys on their family homestead in the San Francisco Bay.

This free event will take place Friday, June 5, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Public Library, in our auditorium.

RAD AMERICAN WOMEN

Author Talk and Presentation: Rad American Women A to Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries Who Shaped Our History… and Our Future!

Author Kate Schatz and artist Miriam Klein Stahl offer an engaging presentation that involves a reading from the book, a slideshow and Q&A, and a conversation about how to be rad! Kate and Miriam are both mothers and teachers, so they’re no stranger to entertaining young folks—audience participation is encouraged.

Rad American Women A to Z will be appreciated by various age groups. It is Common Core aligned for students from third grade through eighth grade. Pre-school and young children will be captured by the bright visuals and easily modified texts, while the subject matter will stimulate and inspire high-schoolers and beyond.

The book includes an introduction that discusses what it means to be “rad” and “radical,” an afterword with 26 suggestions for how you can be “rad,” and a resource guide with ideas for further learning and reading.

American history was made by countless rad—and often radical—women. By offering a fresh and diverse array of female role models, we can remind readers that there are many places to find inspiration, and that being smart and strong and brave is rad.

Come be rad with us!

This free event will take place Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at South San Francisco Main Public Library.

In June, we’ll be looking at Paper, an app that mimics a sketchbook, encouraging you to draw and create with inspirational prompts and contributions from other users; and at Adobe Slate, a visual storytelling app that allows you to combine images and text into beautiful presentations.

These free events will take place at South San Francisco Main Public Library:

  • Paper on iPad on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.

Fall Prevention with the San Mateo County Fall Prevention Task Force

Falling doesn’t have to be a part of getting older. Join the San Mateo County Fall Prevention Task Force for a workshop on avoidable injuries. The SMCFPTF was developed in March 2003 and brings together a coalition of more than 25 different community provider agencies, hospitals, nonprofit organizations, senior centers and private service providers, all serving older adults in San Mateo County. Their mission is to decrease falls among older adults through advocacy, resource development and community education.

This workshop will teach you how to prevent falls with strength training exercises, home safety improvements, medication management, and vision care.
