SSFPD Media Release: Elder Abuse/ Fraud

South San Francisco, CA         March 18, 2014           Submitted by SSFPD SSFPD logo

Sometime during November or December of 2013, an individual who identified himself as a Homeland Security agent telephoned an elderly victim at his residence  on the 1700 block of  El Camino Real in South San Francisco and informed him that he had won a $2 million dollars lottery and a Mercedes Benz. Over the course of the next several months, the victim was tricked into sending approximately $12,000.00-$14,000.00 to the suspect in order to collect the winnings. The victim sent the money via checks and prepaid credit cards to an address in Davie, Florida.

The only description of the suspect is that he was a male caller with an unidentifiable accent. Residents of South San Francisco are urged to be suspicious of callers making such claims, not to send money to anyone under such circumstances, and report such calls to the police.

If you have any information regarding this elder abuse/ fraud, or similar occurrences please contact the South San Francisco Police Department at (650) 877-8900.
