SSFPD Media Release: Elder Scam

South San Francisco, CA   February 25, 2014    Submitted by SSFPD SSFPD logo

On Monday, 02/l 0/2014 at approximately  1100 hours, the victim  on the 10 Block of San Felipe, received  a delivery from   UPS which contained a cashier’s check and instruction from a business fraudulently representing themselves as Wal mart Mystery Shopper. The victim ignored the instructions to cash the cashier’s check, keep/spend some of the money at a local Walmart and send the majority of the funds via Western Union to another Mystery Shopper.

A few days later the victim received  telephone call at her home from a caller who stated he was from Walmart Mystery Shopper demanding that she follow the instructions by cashing the check and forwarding the remaining funds via Western Union. The caller had a heavy foreign accent and continued to call the victim demanding that she follow through with the instructions or he would have the FBI  respond  to her  home. The victim  researched  and  discovered  that the cashier’s check was a fraudulent check and did not suffer a financial loss.

This is a common scam, which the elderly are often vulnerable to as the suspects are persistent and very demanding. Ifyou have any information regarding this case please contact the South San Francisco Police Department at #650-877-8900.
