Over the last few months, numerous cities in the Bay Area have experienced a dramatic increase in the number of residential burglaries occurring in their neighborhoods. Joint efforts by law enforcement agencies and community members have led to the apprehension of several individual responsible for these crimes, including recent arrests made by the San Jose Police Department, Redwood City Police Department, Daly City Police Department, San Francisco Police Department and the South San Francisco Police Department.

In a recent case, plainclothes South San Francisco Police Officers conducting surveillance in the Buri Buri neighborhood interrupted an in-progress residential burglary on the 500 block of Hibiscus Drive. Although the suspects initially evaded capture, the subsequent investigation led to the identification of Antioch resident Brandon Jonathan Burks (DOB 08/09/94) as one of the involved parties. A $100,000 warrant was issued for his arrest and he has since been taken into custody and is facing felony charges of first-degree burglary, possession of stolen property and conspiracy.

Although law enforcement is actively seeking out and arresting individuals for these crimes, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant in reporting suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. The hundreds of calls received by local police departments have been invaluable in assisting officers in keeping our neighborhoods safe. Residents are also encouraged to take additional measures in keeping their houses and property secure, including locking doors and windows, adequately lighting their property during hours of darkness, installing alarm or video surveillance systems, and forming neighborhood watch groups.
