Statement From Speaker pro Tem Mullin on Federal Transit Administration Funding of Caltrain Electrification

South San Francisco, CA  May 21, 2017  Submitted by Speaker pro Tem Kevin Mullin’s Office

Sacramento – “I am thrilled to learn that the Federal Transit Administration will be signing the Full Funding Grant Agreement for the Caltrain Electrification Project. This decision comes after numerous public and private sector groups conveyed to Transportation Secretary Chao that this funding was critical to the region and beyond.  While the electrification of Caltrain will provide a cleaner, faster, quieter rail system that will take cars off our roads, this project will benefit our growing region environmentally and economically for years to come.

The Legislature has worked cooperatively since 2012 to appropriate funding specifically for the improvement of existing commuter rail corridors and Caltrain electrification, the most recent effort being AB 1889 which I authored and Governor Brown signed in 2016. That bill provides timely access to $600 million in state bond funds and helps the State meet its obligation to deliver on its promise for rail electrification. However, that money continued to be in limbo while we awaited Federal Grant approval. To that end, I look to the State’s Department of Finance to release the bond funds, as soon as possible, so we can move this project forward.”
